About Us
1. Our Family History – The Saponjyan Legacy
The Saponjyan family traces its roots to Alaji (Ilıca) village near Erzurum, where our ancestor Aram lived with his five sons — Nerses, Sargis, Khachatur, Gevorg, and Soghomon. From the 16th century, the family became known for soap-making, a craft inherited from their forefathers and originally learned from Crusaders.
By the 17th century, the family was famous as the Saponchians — the soap masters of Erzurum — supplying bathhouses and expanding production as far as Aleppo, Syria. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829, branches of the family migrated to Eastern Armenia, settling in Gyumri, Van, Akhaltskha, and Tsughrut village, where their descendants still live today.
Through every migration, one treasure was preserved: the Holy Gospel of Hovhannes (974 AD, silver-bound manuscript), carried from Erzurum and still kept in the village church. Today, the 8th generation of the Saponjyan family continues this legacy of resilience and craftsmanship.
